Manuel Cauchi To Star in Amadeus at Teatru Manoel
Tickets are now on sale for Peter Shaffer’s Amadeus – winner of the 1981 Tony award for best play – being staged at Teatru Manoel by Masquerade Theatre Company this month.
Tickets for Peter Shaffer’s award-winning play Amadeus – brought to the Teatru Manoel stage by Masquerade Theatre Company once again, as they celebrate their 20th anniversary – are now available. There will be six performances of the timeless piece – which won the Tony award for best play in 1981 – on 19-21 and 26-28 October.
Amadeus is an ornate reimagining of the lives of the world’s greatest composer, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and his arch-rival Antonio Salieri. Shaffer’s 1979 masterpiece takes us back in time to 18th century Vienna, bringing the music of two great composers to life, while exploring the nature of innovation and jealousy in their circle.
Introduced to the elderly Salieri at the opening of the play, he divulges the events that took place 44 years earlier, confessing that it was he who was responsible for Mozart’s death. The supposedly-mad Salieri delivers his confession with pride as he claims he wanted to spite God as his motive for the killing. The well-known murder plot, fuelled by Salieri’s jealousy and bitterness, was perpetuated in Shaffer's 1979 Amadeus, but critics have argued over the possible veracity of this claim. Producer Anthony Bezzina states that this fictionalised history of Amadeus gives it a unique “international appeal and a historic curiosity”, which, indeed, has contributed to its huge success.
Amadeus is being revisited 16 years after it was initially staged to rave reviews by Masquerade Theatre Company in 2002. The 2018 show will take on a new director, set and cast at Teatru Manoel from 19 October. The play will see veteran actor Manuel Cauchi return to the stage after almost four years to play the role of Salieri, as well as the renowned Thomas Camilleri playing the role of Mozart. It is being directed by Stephen Oliver.
AMADEUS by Peter Shaffer will be produced by Masquerade Theatre Company for six performances at Teatru Manoel, Valletta. Shows will take place on 19-21 and 26-28 October 2018. Tickets start from €18 are now available via www.teatrumanoel.com.mt.
